The “Development of an Assessment System to Evaluate the Ecological Status of Rivers in the Hindu Kush-Himalayan Region” (ASSESS-HKH) represents a novelty on the field of bio-indication in this area. For the first time, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, and Pakistan are involved in a common research activity that aims at the development of new tools for river quality assessment using benthic macroinvertebrates.

A successful implementation of ASSESS-HKH, therefore needs to tie the public into the project. This is done by frequent information of the public about the research programme, its objectives, and the overall benefit for the region and its people.
